If the police come to your shop for verification — what to do in the first 30 minutes
Police verification is routine — every honest shop sees it sooner or later. There's no need to panic. Stay calm and handle it the right way. Here it is, step by step.
- 1
Stay calm.
A verification is not an accusation — the officers are doing their job. If you keep records, you have no reason to be afraid.
- 2
Cooperate fully.
Answer what's asked, plainly and clearly. Don't argue, don't raise your voice. Cooperation is the best path.
- 3
Show your record.
Open the record for the phone in question — it shows when the check was run, the IMEI it was run against, what our stolen-device records returned, and the seller's identity and signed declaration. Show that phone's bill and stock entry too if needed.
- 4
Note the officer's details.
Calmly ask for and write down the officer's name, rank/badge number and police station. This is for your own record.
- 5
Give only what's asked.
Share the record and bill for that specific phone or deal. Don't volunteer your whole shop's accounts unprompted — a straight answer to a straight question.
- 6
No arguing, no excuses.
If you can't recall something or a record isn't handy, just say you'll check — never lie or stall. The truth and your record are your strongest position.
- 7
Keep your own note.
After the visit, write down the date, time, which phone/deal it concerned, and the officer's details, for your own reference. It helps if you ever need it later.
- 8
If it looks serious, talk to a lawyer.
If the matter goes beyond a single phone, there's no harm in calling your lawyer — that is your right.
One honest note
This is general information only, not legal advice. Every case is different — for your specific situation, always consult a qualified lawyer.
The best protection is the record you keep before the deal.
Check every phone's IMEI before you pay — the government's own Sanchar Saathi service answers an SMS of KYM <IMEI> to 14422 — and keep a time-stamped record of every check you run.
